Wool Pom Pom Bag Charm

This small pom-pom begins as something that would otherwise be thrown away.

When the frazada — the handwoven Andean blanket made by women in the high Andes — is cut into cushions, tassels, and bags, there are offcuts. Lengths of naturally dyed sheep wool that are too small for anything larger. The Wool Pom Pom Bag Charm is made from those remnants, wound tightly, trimmed into shape, and finished with a laser-engraved Orange Inca wooden disc and a brass O-ring.

Clip it onto a bag handle, a keyring, a zip pull — anywhere a little colour and a good story belong.

Made in a cooperative workshop in Lima from sheep wool originally woven in the Peruvian Andes. Naturally dyed. Each one is slightly different depending on which part of the frazada the wool came from.

Do not wash at home. Frazadas are handwoven and coloured with natural plant dyes — whether used as a floor rug, a blanket, a wall hanging, or a tablecloth, the care is the same. Home washing risks colour transfer between dye lots and deformation of the flat weave structure. This applies regardless of how you use the piece.

For routine care: take the frazada outside every few weeks and beat or shake it firmly to release surface dust and grit. This is the most effective method for keeping it clean between professional washes.

For spills: blot immediately with a clean, colourless cloth — never rub. Work from the edges of the spill inward. If a mark remains once dry, press gently with a cloth dampened in cold water and a small amount of pH-neutral wool soap. Do not scrub. Air dry flat in a ventilated space away from direct heat.

Do not use: bleach, ammonia, solvents, hot water, or standard laundry detergent.

For deeper cleaning: take to a specialist dry cleaner once a year. Specify that it is 100% handwoven wool with natural plant dyes and request pH-neutral cleaning products.

Loose threads: use a blunt instrument to push the thread back into the weave from the front. If too long, tie a small knot close to the surface and trim. Never pull loose threads.

Storage: roll, do not fold — folding creates permanent creases in flat-woven textiles. Wrap in breathable cotton. Use cedar or lavender for moth protection. Never store in plastic bags.

Frazada cushion covers: Remove the cushion insert before any cleaning. Spot clean only with a cloth dampened in cold water — blot, do not rub. Do not hand wash or soak the cover; the cream backing fabric is at risk of colour transfer from the naturally-dyed frazada front. For a thorough clean, take to a professional and specify natural plant dyes.

Frazada bags and tassels: Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap. Do not submerge.
