Leather Handbags Care

How to Care for Your Leather Handbag

The leather used in Orange Inca handbags is soft tumbled leather — stitched and finished by hand in a family workshop in Lima. It has been professionally dyed and sealed to give it a lasting, consistent colour, and it's designed to be carried, not kept.

Leather is a material that rewards use. Over time it softens, adapts to wear, and develops a patina that makes it look better — not worse — with age. A simple care routine is all it needs to do exactly that.

Everyday Care

Wipe the bag down occasionally with a soft dry cloth to remove dust and light surface marks.

Avoid placing the bag on rough or abrasive surfaces, which can scuff the leather — particularly at the base corners.

If the bag gets lightly caught in rain, pat it dry gently with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.

Protecting the Leather

Applying a leather conditioner every few months will keep the leather supple and help prevent it from drying out over time.

Use a conditioner designed for smooth leather. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, work it in gently, then buff away any excess with a clean dry cloth.

Avoid products containing silicone, petroleum, or heavy wax — these can affect the leather's finish over time.

If you live in a humid climate or travel frequently with the bag, a light coat of leather protector spray can help repel moisture and minor surface marks.

Cleaning Advice

For light marks or surface dust, a soft damp cloth is usually enough. Wipe gently and allow the leather to dry naturally.

For more stubborn marks, a small amount of dedicated leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth can be used. Always test on a small hidden area first.

Avoid soaking the leather or using household cleaning products — these can strip its natural oils and affect the finish.

If the bag gets thoroughly wet, do not use direct heat to dry it — no hairdryer, radiator, or sunny windowsill. Allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature.

Colour & Finish

The leather is professionally dyed and sealed with a fixative that locks in the colour and prevents transfer to clothing or skin.

Over time and with regular use, the leather will naturally soften and develop a gentle patina. Small variations in tone at areas of regular use — handles, corners, the base — are the character of real leather, not a fault.

Storage

Store the bag in its dust bag when not in use, in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Sunlight can fade the leather over time.

Avoid hanging the bag by its strap for long periods — store it upright or resting on its base to help maintain its shape.

If the bag won't be used for some time, stuff it lightly with tissue paper to preserve the structure.

Do not store leather in plastic — it needs to breathe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the leather get wet?

Light rain or splashing is generally fine — pat it dry and allow it to air dry naturally. Avoid prolonged soaking, and never use heat to speed up drying, as this can cause the leather to stiffen or crack.

How often should I condition the leather?

Every two to three months is a good starting point for regular use. In drier climates or during winter heating season, conditioning a little more often helps keep the leather supple.

Will the colour transfer onto my clothes?

The leather is sealed with a fixative specifically to prevent colour transfer. With a brand-new bag, carrying it a few times first allows any surface excess to fully settle. If you are concerned, a clean dry cloth rubbed gently over the surface beforehand will pick up any residue.

The leather looks slightly different in the areas I use most — is this normal?

Yes. Soft tumbled leather develops a natural patina with use, and areas of regular contact will soften and deepen slightly in tone over time. This is how real leather ages — it is not a defect.

Can I use baby wipes or household cleaners on the leather?

Avoid these. Household products and wipes often contain chemicals that can dry out or discolour the leather. Use a product made specifically for smooth leather care.

How should I store the bag long-term?

In its dust bag, stuffed lightly with tissue paper to hold its shape, in a cool dry place with good airflow. Not in plastic, not in direct sunlight.

What if the strap scuffs?

Light scuffs on the vegetable-tanned leather strap can often be buffed out gently with a soft cloth or a small amount of leather conditioner. The strap is made to develop character with wear.
