Alpaca & Wool Handbags Care
How to Care for Alpaca & Wool Handbags
Alpaca and wool handbags combine the softness of natural fibres with the structure of a handbag. These materials are durable and resilient, but like all natural fibres they benefit from thoughtful care.
With the right attention, your Orange Inca textile handbag can remain beautiful and functional for many years.
Everyday Care
After use, allow your handbag to air naturally. Fresh air helps natural fibres maintain freshness and recover after use.
Many of our larger handbags and weekenders are designed to carry everyday items. However, avoid placing excessive strain on the strap attachments, especially when lifting a heavily filled bag.
If dust appears on the fabric surface, gently brush it away with a soft clothing brush.
Cleaning Advice
For light marks or surface dust, gentle brushing is usually enough to restore the appearance of the fibres.
If deeper cleaning is required, start by gently wiping the affected area with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the fabric or applying strong household cleaning products.
Some wool handbags may tolerate careful hand washing in cold water, but this should only be done when the entire bag can be safely cleaned and dried evenly. If unsure, we recommend consulting a professional cleaner experienced with delicate textiles.
If a stain occurs, avoid rubbing the area aggressively, as this can push the stain deeper into the fibres.
Lining Care
The interior lining of the handbag is typically made from fabric and is often easier to clean than the exterior fibres.
If the lining becomes marked, it can usually be cleaned with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water and mild soap. Allow the bag to dry fully in fresh air afterwards.
Humidity & Natural Fibres
Alpaca and wool are natural fibres and may react to humidity.
In humid environments, allow the handbag to air occasionally in a ventilated space. Avoid storing the bag in sealed plastic containers or damp environments.
Storage
When not in use, store your handbag in a breathable dust bag in a dry place.
We include small silica gel sachets with many of our handbags. These help absorb excess moisture and can be kept inside the bag or dust bag, particularly in humid climates.
Like other natural animal fibres, alpaca and wool may occasionally attract clothes moths if stored for long periods in dark or undisturbed spaces.
To help protect your handbag, keep it clean, store it in a breathable environment and consider natural repellents such as cedar wood blocks or lavender sachets.
Colour & Natural Dyes
Some Orange Inca handbags are coloured using natural dyes. Over long periods of strong sun exposure, colours may soften slightly.
This gentle fading is a natural characteristic of plant-based dyes and fibres. To preserve colour for longer, avoid leaving the handbag in direct sunlight for extended periods, such as near sunny windows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can alpaca or wool handbags be washed?
Some wool handbags may tolerate careful hand washing in cold water. However, because handbags often contain structure, lining and hardware, it is safest to clean them gently by hand using a cloth unless you are confident the entire piece can be washed and dried evenly.
How do I remove dust from the fabric?
A soft clothing brush is usually enough to gently remove dust from the surface of the fibres.
Can these handbags attract moths?
Like other natural fibres, alpaca and wool may attract clothes moths if stored for long periods without ventilation. Keeping the bag clean and using natural repellents such as cedar or lavender can help prevent this.
Will the colour fade over time?
Natural fibres and dyes may soften in colour after long exposure to strong sunlight. This usually develops gradually and can give the piece a softer tone over time.
What are the silica gel sachets included with my bag?
Silica gel sachets help absorb moisture and protect natural fibres from excess humidity. We include them to help preserve the material during storage and transport.
