Our Silk Baby Alpaca Blend Shawl is 70% baby alpaca and 30% silk. The silk gives it a soft sheen and a smoother, more fluid drape than pure alpaca, at a fraction of the weight. Earth Tones comes in undyed two-tone combinations, in the natural colours of the fibre.

Designed for spring and summer evenings and easy to wear all year round. Wear it as a wrap over a dress, a scarf, or a light travel layer. It folds flat and weighs next to nothing.

Care Guide

Wear it often, wash it rarely. Alpaca is a forgiving fibre and has no lanolin, so it holds less dirt and smell than wool. After wearing, air it for a few hours and brush it gently with a soft clothing brush if needed. That is usually all it needs.

Small marks: blot straight away with a clean, damp cloth, working from the edges of the mark in. Do not rub. Let it dry naturally, lying flat, away from direct heat or sunlight.

When it really needs a clean: follow the care label on your piece. Our labels say dry clean, so take it to a dry cleaner. For most people that is about once a season, ideally just before you store it away, because moths are drawn to pieces that have been worn and not cleaned. This goes for every alpaca piece, from beanies, hats, mittens and headbands to scarves, shawls, jumpers, coats and throws.

Some pieces are blends, so always check the label on yours. The Super Wash Throw is the one exception: it is a treated alpaca and wool blend, and its label says it can be machine washed on a delicate cycle.

Never machine wash any other alpaca piece, and never tumble dry.

For all pieces: store folded, not hung — hanging stretches the fibres over time. Store in a breathable cotton or calico bag with cedar or lavender — never in a plastic bag, which traps moisture and can cause mould. If you notice any small pulls, use a fabric comb to gently tease them out rather than pulling.

Where is this made?

Every Orange Inca piece is designed in Australia and made in Peru — by cooperativas, family businesses, and small production centres that we know personally and return to. The makers are predominantly women. The processes are predominantly by hand.

What does "handmade" actually mean?

It means a person made it. Not a machine that requires a person nearby. The junco bags are woven row by row on simple frames. The frazadas are woven on traditional looms over days, sometimes weeks. The leather bags are stitched and finished by hand in a family workshop in Lima. Handmade at Orange Inca means the hands are genuinely involved — not as a marketing label but as the only way these things can be made.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

Natural dyes produce slight variation in tone — two pieces of the same colourway may differ subtly. This is inherent to the dyeing process and applies across the range. With heavy wear in friction areas, slight pilling is possible on knitted pieces; use a fabric comb to gently remove it. These are the natural characteristics of an alpaca piece — not flaws.

Will it last?

Baby alpaca is one of the most durable natural fibres — it doesn't pill the way merino can, doesn't stretch out of shape, and retains its softness over years of wear. The natural dyes are stable and colourfast with proper care. With the right handling, an alpaca piece will look the same in ten years.

What's your returns policy?

Every piece is made by hand and checked before it leaves us. If something arrives faulty or isn't as described, contact us within 14 days at returns@orangeinca.com and we'll make it right — refund, exchange, or repair.

We don't offer change-of-mind returns or exchanges. With handmade goods, each piece is unique; once it's been made for you, it can't simply be put back. We'd rather help you choose right from the start — if you have questions about sizing, colour, or whether something will work for you, ask before you buy.

EU customers: you have a 14-day cooling-off period in line with consumer protection regulations.

Yes. We ship worldwide from Sydney via Australia Post (standard) or DHL — you choose at checkout. Delivery times vary by destination.
